How To Work From Home

Working from home can make someone a little crazy because it is filled with distractions. Laundry, washing dishes… “catching up” with life. You might find yourself being extremely productive to with your personal life but then feeling swamp with your work life. Hopefully by the end of this post, you will have some tips and tricks which will help you stay productive.

When You Wake Up

You have seen it all over Instagram and personally, I don’t practice this all the time but dressing as if you are “going to the office.” Take a shower, put on some makeup, and do your hair.

Before doing any of this- turn on your computer and WALK AWAY! This way, your computer will be ready to go when it’s go time!

When working from home can get mundane. Looking cute can help put you in a good mindset to start your day.

Mindset is everything!

Gratitude Practice

When I went to Rise Conference, I was gifted a Start Today journal. In the morning, I try to write down five things I’m grateful for and 10 dreams I want to accomplish as if they already happened. I do notice when I don’t do this, my days aren’t the best. Doing a gratitude practice really helps me be on the look out for the small things that are great during the day and helps me with my mindset.

It’s awesome to be able find small things to be grateful for especially for those times when things aren’t going your way.

Create a Schedule

Seriously. Do it. There are a couple of ways when creating a schedule.

Create time slots and write your to dos and task you need to get done during that time.

Example:

9:00-10:00 Client #1

  • Create graphics
  • Facebook posts
  • Send emails

10:00- 11:00 Client #2

  • Create graphics
  • Facebook posts
  • Send emails

11:00- 12:00 Client #3

  • Create graphics
  • Facebook posts
  • Send emails

You get the idea.

Another idea I like to use is scheduling myself breaks. Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take 5 minute breaks every hour. I know you are going to want to take your puppy out and might use it as an excuse … but don’t! Use your breaks to take him or her out on mini walks but you will have resist the urge to cuddle. Okay… schedule in one or two cuddle sessions a day but keep them short! This will help you keep your stamina up which will help you stay focus through out the day.

Make sure you also give yourself a lunch break. Like a legit break. Not eating at your computer thing you do at the office. There’s no one you need to impress by how hard you are working but instead, giving yourself a real break will help you be more productive and be your reset button.

Productivity is the secret sauce when it comes to working from home.

Help You Stay Focus

Peppermint essential oil is the besttttt!

It helps me to clear my headaches, create focus by using it in the diffuser, and it’s life!

Using a journal also helps me stay focus. I do something called brain dumping where I take a small breaks and just dump all my ideas onto a page. When you have to problem solve for 8 hours a day for clients, sometimes you get inspiration for another project but it causes distraction.

Also journaling is a great way to check in with yourself. Working from home can create cabin fever. You might want to get up and head to a coffee shop but I’m telling you… it will create more of a distraction. Journaling can help you check in with your emotions and hopefully help you work through what negative feelings working from home can cause.

Anyways, brain dumping and journaling helps clear my head. Who knows, maybe your next big idea might come from this.

Negative Feelings

We really need to talk about this for a second. Working from home has been amazing but it does cause loneliness. Not having co workers to chat with or having a place to bounce ideas can cause a lot of self talk. Which can make you go a little crazy. Make sure to schedule some time to video chat with a close co-worker. My friend and I made a pack to try to get on a phone call at least once a week to talk business, life, and mastermind. It’s super crucial to do this because in the past, not doing this put me back in a depression. Then nothing would get done.

Combining work life into your home space can be cause a blur line and it might turn into you over working. I have done it before since everything I need is at my figure tips or in the next room. This lead to burn out. Take breaks, give yourself grace, and breathe.

Eat Healthy

Make sure you make yourself a really good meal for yourself and make it healthy. Eat a salad. It’s actually yummy.

Set Your Final Alarm

I have many more ideas on how to work from home but here’s my last tip; set your last alarm and stick with it. If you leave to go home at 6 p.m., set an alarm to shut down the computer. If you’re not done with your to do list, I promise you, it will still be there tomorrow. You’re going to have to start practicing that from 9-5, it’s work time and at 5, it’s doneeeeeee! I would also suggest you to work in a second bedroom or a place where you can close the door. Sometimes having a physical action to “call it a day” is very helpful.

Write This Down

  • Turn on your computer when you first wake up and WALK AWAY.
  • Start a Gratitude Practice
  • Create a Schedule
  • Give yourself breaks
  • Journal and brain dump
  • Set alarms
  • Eat Healthy
  • Stay Focus

I understand this transition might be hard and truthfully it took me about two years to “get it.” Hopefully with these tips, it will help you stay focused and you can enjoy working from home.
